How do I add time between my connecting flights?

I am flying to Johannesburg, South Africa, and the connecting flight is in Germany on the way there, and in France on the way back. My fiance and I were hoping to take advantage of the stop overs, and spend a week in each country. Is there a way we can adjust the flight layover time with out booking four different flights completely? if we do each flight on its own it is something like $7200, where as together just as a connection it is only $1700. any tips, stories of experience are welcomed. thanks.

When searching for your flights, there is usually a spot to put in for multiple cities. It will most likely be more expensive to do this, than just having a connection in these countries.

If you stay for a week, it is no longer a connection. It’s a stopover and that usually means a much higher airfare.
Sometimes, an airline will offer a fare that allows a stopover on the way with little additional charge. I suggest that you find a good travel agent and explain your situation. A travel agent can research the fares (and there may be a lot of them) and tell you if your plan is feasible and how much it will cost.

NYC>FRA - April 09
FRA>JNB - April 16
JNB>CDG - April 23
CDG>NYC - April 30
FRA/Frankfurt
JNB/Johannesburg

NYC can be EWR/Newark or JFK/Kennedy
